Definition of Entrepreneurship

According to Investopedia, an entrepreneur is an individual who creates a new business, assumes most of the risks, and reaps most of the rewards. They use the necessary skills and initiative to anticipate needs and bring new ideas to the market.

Meanwhile, BDC defines an entrepreneur as someone who creates, owns, and manages a business in any sector. They are businesspeople who achieve success by taking risks.

From both definitions, it can be concluded that entrepreneurship refers to the person—the business actor—rather than the type of business activity. In other words, “wirausaha” is synonymous with “entrepreneur.” But how does it differ from wiraswasta and pengusaha?

According to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), wirausaha (entrepreneur) is the same as wiraswasta. However, wirausaha emphasizes the courage to innovate and take risks in starting a business. On the other hand, wiraswasta refers more broadly to anyone working independently and not relying on others—including freelancers.

Meanwhile, pengusaha (businessman) is a term used to describe someone who runs a business, whether they started it themselves or continued an existing one, such as purchasing a franchise or managing a family business.


What Makes Someone a Successful Entrepreneur?


Every successful entrepreneur has their own tips and strategies. However, if we draw a common thread, there are several key similarities that shape them into accomplished entrepreneurs. Here are some of them:


1. Passion

Successful entrepreneurs usually start their journey with something they truly enjoy. When people work according to their passion, they tend to be more resilient under pressure and stay motivated to grow—even when faced with major challenges.


2. Versatility

In the early stages, entrepreneurs often have to be hands-on with multiple aspects of the business—from product development to sales and customer service. This makes them highly versatile and deeply familiar with their business inside out, allowing them to identify which areas need improvement.


3. Flexibility

Focus is important, but not every idea works right away. Successful entrepreneurs demonstrate strong flexibility and adaptability. They can adjust their strategies, products, or services to discover the formula that works best.


4. Financial Savvy

In the first few years, businesses may not yet generate profit. Great entrepreneurs, however, find ways to keep their ventures running—not through speculation, but through careful calculations and an understanding of financial risks. Thanks to this skill, they can manage cash flow, secure funding or investment, and separate personal from business finances.


5. Resilience and Perseverance

Starting a business from scratch is full of challenges and uncertainty. Entrepreneurs need strong mental resilience to rise from setbacks and remain focused on long-term goals. This perseverance is what enables them to survive and keep growing.


6. Communication Skills

Effective communication is one of the main keys to entrepreneurship. From presenting a vision to investors, inspiring teams, and negotiating with partners, to handling customer complaints—without strong communication, it’s hard to build trust and solid collaboration.


7. Business Acumen

Great entrepreneurs can spot opportunities, understand financial statements, and craft the right growth strategies. One example is the ability to choose a strategic business location. Without this, even the best business idea can fail to attract customers and struggle to grow in the long run.


Tips for Choosing the Right Business Location


As mentioned earlier, one of the hallmarks of business acumen is the ability to choose the right location. That’s why it’s important to consider the following aspects before deciding where to establish your business:


1. Proximity to Target Market

Your business location should make it easy for customers to find and access your products or services. The closer it is to your target market, the higher your chances of attracting buyers. Unless your business mainly operates online, physical proximity to customers plays a significant role.


2. Accessibility and Infrastructure

Ensure the location is easy to reach, whether by private vehicle or public transportation. Also, check the availability of essential infrastructure such as internet connection, stable electricity, water supply, and waste disposal—so they don’t become barriers to daily operations.


3. Foot Traffic

For retail, food and beverage, or direct-to-consumer services, foot traffic is crucial. Locations in busy areas—near markets, shopping centers, or stations—can give you a significant advantage.


4. Competition and Market Saturation

It’s important to map out nearby competitors. If there are too many similar businesses in the same area, you risk entering a crowded market with limited share. However, in certain industries—like real estate agencies or building supply stores—being in a business cluster can actually boost visibility.


5. Location Costs and Hidden Expenses

Renting or buying a business space isn’t the only expense. Pay attention to local taxes, business permits, renovation costs, and utility fees. Some areas may seem affordable at first but hide long-term costs that could burden your operations.


6. Compliance with Regulations and Permits

Check whether the chosen location complies with local zoning and government regulations for your type of business. Make sure you can obtain the necessary permits and that the location isn’t in an area with restricted activities.


7. Distribution and Logistics

If your business relies on supplies or product deliveries, choose a location that is easily accessible to logistics vehicles. Avoid areas with restrictions on loading hours or locations that are difficult for large vehicles to reach.


8. Employee Facilities and Comfort

If you plan to hire employees, consider areas with easy access and supporting facilities such as food stalls, places of worship, or public transport. The quality of the surrounding environment also affects your team’s comfort and productivity.


9. Location Image and Brand Positioning

Make sure the location reflects your brand image. For example, a premium fashion brand will be better positioned in an upscale shopping district rather than a traditional market area.


10. Safety and Security

Never underestimate safety. Choose a location with low crime rates, adequate lighting, and proper security systems. This matters not only for protecting your business assets but also for the comfort of customers and employees—especially if your business operates late into the night.


11. Growth Potential

Think long-term. Does the location allow for future expansion? Is the area developing? You don’t want to relocate too soon because the space has become too small or the neighborhood has stagnated.

Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a mix of passion, resilience, financial savvy, and the ability to spot opportunities—including choosing the right business location.
